My Top Sleep Tips For Newborns

Updated: Mar 9, 2020

0-6 months

Here are a few tips to help everyone get a better nights sleep...

1. Always place baby on their back to sleep.

2. Place your baby in the "feet to foot" position – with their feet touching the end of the cot, moses basket, or pram.

3. Have your baby sleep with you in the same room in a separate cot or moses basket for the first 6 months.

4. Need to feed every 2-3 hours to thrive & grow including during the night.

5. Use a mattress that's firm, flat, waterproof and in good condition.

6. Keep your baby away from smoke during pregnancy and after birth.

7. Make the room temperature between 16C to 20C, with light bedding or a lightweight baby sleeping bag.

8. Daytime Naps - At this age babies should be having between 3-5 naps per day, lasting 30 minutes - 2 hours.

9. Practise putting your baby down awake. Being a newborn they generally will be asleep when you do this but its definitely a good habit to get into.

10. Evening routine. It is never too soon to implement a routine. This can be very simple. Make bath time relaxing, a nice baby massage after bath can be lovely too.

It is VERY important to have all the information regarding SIDS when it comes to newborns sleep. Check out my blog post explaining what you need to know about SIDS or the NHS website.
